Windows Marketplace: More Phones And Web Store

leave a comment »

Windows Marketplace for Mobile was launched at the beginning of October. Until now, it has been available for only new Windows Mobile phones with the latest 6.5 version of the operating system. Microsoft indicated that Marketplace for Mobile would gain a reach of 30 million consumers worldwide. To get to this number, existing Windows Mobile phones with older operating system version also need to be supported. And that’s exactly what Microsoft announced. Later this month, Marketplace will also be available for consumers with Windows Mobile 6.0 or 6.1 phones, which will greatly improve the reach of the store.

A second announcement is that Microsoft now launched a Web version of its store, following the steps of RIM:

Users of a Windows Mobile phone can use this Web version to browse the full content catalog and download/purchase applications. The selected applications are delivered wirelessly to the customer’s Windows phone and install the next time the Windows Marketplace client runs on the device. At launch there were 246 applications available in Marketplace. Today, the United States version contains 386 apps in total.
